This weekend wiped me out!
Here are just a few highlights. Mostly pics today.
Long run- 20 miles. Not the best I have ever done, legs not feeling fantastic.
It was a week of touch-and-go running with a set of hill repeats that made me wonder if I had strained a calf. It seems OK now, but I could use a visit with my LMT.
Also, I need to work on NOT eating lots of snacks after dinner if I run early. Long run stomach issues came up any time I tried to push my pace. Still, I am pleased to have been able to get out and run for a few hours on a dry day.

We went crabbing with my boys, my dad and his friend after my long run. I am so proud of him for quitting smoking after picking up the habit as a youngster. I think he's trying to keep distracted with lots of activity. He picked a good one for all of us!
My dad manned the boat and his friend hauled in the traps. The boys and I just tried to have fun and keep warm. Despite the sun, it was in the 40's.
Docks in Coos Bay, OR
"Skinny" loves anything regarding fishing...
"Spud" was hoping to drive the boat. Didn't happen. (Year is wrong on the pics...I have no idea how to fix that!)
Ray hauled in the crab cages, and helped me make sure the little one didn't fall out of the boat. Tough job!
Danger boy: "Wing-nut"
A little last minute fishing off the dock..no luck.
An incredible feast afterwards, thanks to Ray's wife!
All in all, we came home with a great outing, one damaged prop, and one legal crab. I am sure in a week, we'll be ready to do it all again!

All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
For believers: Ecclesiastes 1:7
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
How did your weekend go?
This looks like so much fun!!! Glad that the calf is ok. Uphills can be rough on the calves. Sorry the 20 wasn't great, but you did it and that is what matters. :)
ReplyDeleteLove the pics. Beautiful! Hope you get some rest this week. Happy Monday!
Yes. Very true! I was given some advice to shorten my stride, wchich should help in the future.
DeleteRaina, your boys are so handsome! Gosh, I want to give them a big hug:) Sounds like a perfect day. I love family activities after a long run!
ReplyDeleteHills - I did 6x2 min today and I almost died! So HARD for me, but so good for the body, I think. Your calf will be fine. Do you self massage? I can't really roll my calves, so I massage them almost every night while watching TV. I try to mimic what my massage therapist did moons ago:)
You are right...hard but good all at once. I do self massage, but my LMT actually uses her elbows on my tough spots. That's hard for me to do. :) Weak fingers here.
DeleteNice.. and love the pics. I end up working my calves with a wood rolling pin on the floor.. tortuous, but sure helps. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have used those too! And PVC pipe. Anything to get at those knots.
DeleteYour boys are beautiful. Your pics are too! I love getting windows into your life. You're doing such a good job in life Raina...as a mother, with training, your faith. Hope your calf feels better soon. These bodies can only go so far...too bad they don't match our mind sometimes...and stick with us through all we WANT to do with them. Love you!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Amanda. I can say the same for you :)
DeleteI think the calf is OK. I have been putting it through a lot lately. It might just need a little pampering and TLC.
Looks so fun! Great job doing 20!
ReplyDeleteI am working on increasing my mileage...
Thanks denae! I think it's two steps forward and a recovery week for me now.
DeleteIt looks like you had such a good weekend. Coos Bay is beautiful! I remember having volleyball tournaments there in high school. I can't even believe I used to play volleyball....that seems like a iifetime ago!
ReplyDeleteIn general I just need to stop snacking on crap during the whole day. Especially when I get home from work. My latest craving is the cucumber dill greek yogurt dip from costco (it is CRACK!!!) with wheat thins. I just need to go home and run so that I don't eat when I walk in the door!
Thank you so much for letting me feature you. You are such an inspiration and incredible runner. So glad to have you as a Brooks sister! XXXXX
That yogurt dip sounds delicious and now I want to try to make my own! Maybe with real yogurt and cucumber slices it sin't so unhealthy?
DeleteMarshfield and North Bend High were in our league for play, so we made many away trips for soccer, swimming, tennis. Yes. a lifetime ago, now.
Thanks again for doing the spotlight :)
So fun, so beautiful. Minus the cold. I don't really like the cold. Love the verse at the end.
ReplyDeleteI am not a big fan of COLD. Cool is OK with exercise, though. Did you notice our snow clothes?
DeleteLove the crabbing pics - my son is the same about fishing.
ReplyDeleteGlad your calf is alright!
Thank you Kathy!
DeleteWhat fun, and what a beautiful place you have to live! Nice job on the long run, and I hope your calf behaves itself!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kate! Love being near the coast :)
DeleteLooks like a super fun weekend. I love crabs, but have never crabbed from a boat. We just always put crab pots off my parents dock. Hope you have a better week of running!
ReplyDeleteThat's what we usually do too. I think it almost works better that way.
DeleteHills are very hard on your calf muscles! That's why I avoid hills as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteYour photos remind me of when my family would go crabbing, good times. :)
No kidding! I am reminded! Crabbing is a FUN family thing to do.
Delete20 miler - that is MASSIVE. Great work on that run especially when you are not feeling it. Hope you have a great week of running ahead and calf is nothing to worry about.
ReplyDeletePS how gorgeous are your little fella?!!?
Just saw your lovely feature! Awesome job on the 20 miler. And beautiful pics of your boys! Sounds like an ideal weekend.
ReplyDeleteMy kids would love crabbing! I'm hoping they can see the ocean for the first time next summer. It will be the Jersey Shore, but hey that's a start, right? :^)
ReplyDeleteWe had a good but cold weekend here. I certainly didn't run 20 miles, but I did get my run in. And it's supposed to warm up to the 50s later in the week.
Loved the verse at the end of the post, and will go check out the feature now.
Nice to a have a day like that with your family. Its a great way to cap off a long 20 miler. Its even greater to know that you have enough energy to have a nice family day after that run. So cool that your dad quit smoking. When I was 6 years old my dad asked me what I wanted for my birthday. I told him I wanted to quit smoking. He put the cigarette out and never smoked again. That was 50 years ago and I am blessed to still have him around today.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story, Kepa! I am very proud of how my dad has done.
DeleteBeautiful pics!! I feel so blessed to live in Oregon -- it doesn't get much more beautiful than our fabulous state! (Okay, the winter weather could be improved upon...). Your boys are adorable and that feast looks delicious. I love having a family day after first sneaking out for a little "me" time like a 20 mile run. :)
ReplyDeleteAwww...what a fun weekend! You have such a nice looking family. Hope your legs feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool activity to do with the kids! It makes me miss fishing, which rarely happens.:)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your dad and kicking his habit, that is awesome! I lost my mom to lung cancer when I was really young, and my dad to emphysema 10 years ago; I'm always passionate about supporting the lung association. What a fun outing with your dad and kiddos. Crabbing in Colorado is non-existant; I could see my kids so into that when they were younger. Heck, even now at 17!
ReplyDeleteSolid run, girl. Not every run goes perfectly (as you know) staying positive is key and you nailed that!
Thanks for the update on life! :) (I'm so behind on the life thing, it's not you, it's me - time is non-existent some days!) xo
Precious times :) .
ReplyDeleteThat is great! I love trips/adventures/outings like that! Lovely photos of all the lovely people. My weekend was great with some running and lots of eating. :) Now I'm off to read the post about you! Super!
ReplyDeleteAh Raina!!! Sounds like the perfect day! Not sure there are any crabs in Lake of the Woods but man, Max would love this!! Your boys are so beautiful. Love when you share pictures of your family!
ReplyDeleteNice work on another 20 miler;) I'm looking forward to that feeling after 20 miles!! Will be awhile before I get back up there but in the meantime, I'll read your notes and smile:)
It looked like an amazing day! I love having an epic day with family, a day when you're together and no matter what happens, it turns out to be a wonderful memory.
ReplyDeleteSounds (and looks) like a fun weekend! Beautiful pictures!
ReplyDeletetoo much fun. miss the oregon coast.
ReplyDeleteWow, that first pic is absolutely breath taking!! So beautiful. Sounds like great family time together.
ReplyDeleteTell your Dad to Stay Strong!! It's a hard habit to quit. My Dad's been through it a few times.
you have beautiful sons.
ReplyDeleteboth my parents were heavy smokers and both stopped cold turkey several years ago... Good for you dad!
oh I got my ghost 5 and I am in running love!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you better than the 4s
I have a couple of 4s still to use but the 5s are going in my rotation now for my LR!
You were busy! Looks like a fun and beautiful weekend though. Hope your calf feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous day and look at those handsome kiddos! Take care of that calf girl--topical magnesium and a Tommy Copper sleeve and maybe some cursing fixed mine right up.
ReplyDeleteI miss weekends when I got to 'dink' around.
ReplyDeleteVery nice pictures!
My weekend was lovely, lots of riding with friends.
ReplyDeletePS I started blogging again. :-)
I always say "I need a weekend to recover from the weekend" It is true, we try to cram as much as we can in that 48 hour span
ReplyDeleteEven though the 20 miles was challenging, it still did it. Sometimes we train to build our endurance, other times, we train to build our mental toughness
