I thought I was pretty smooth for going out prepared, but is my fuel belt on backwards?
We got our snow for the year! (And it's almost gone now.) I couldn't resist doing a few snow runs while I had the chance.
I thought I had researched this snow running thing out, and went right to action, preparing my Brooks Launch shoes with some good, old-fashioned, protection.
Somewhere around mile 8 or 9 the protection fell away and I had a little flappage to pack home.
After consulting the snow running experts in Minnesota, this is not the type of snow for "winterizing your shoes".
Yes. I still have much to learn with running.
I am 95% sure this will not be the weather I will have to deal with on race day in Eugene. As much as I like a once-a-year snow run, I am glad not to have to train or race in it often!

We headed up the mountains behind our house for a little cross-training fun later.
This guy know how to put down the hotdogs- even with mittens!
Friend's son with perfectly aligned mini-marshmallows.
We were trying to limit the intake of sugar by using the minis (actually we just ran out of the regulars), but Matthew found a way to make it worth the effort. :)
Do you run in the snow, or would you rather be indoors? I enjoyed day one, and even day two, but today it was rain mixed with snow...not sure I liked that!
Which way is my fuel belt supposed to be worn? I posted these photos on facebook and a friend commented that she wears hers the other way! I understand being able to reach the zipper pouch, but the (two) water bottles seem more comfortable in the back. Upon some Internet searches, I can't find photos of anyone actually wearing the belts! It honestly wouldn't surprise me if I was wearing it backwards.
I wear my fuel belt with the water in the back too. I would have never thought to duct tape my shoes. S and I just went out in it hoping for the best. I slipped a little, but once the snow started it was easy to run on. Luckily it stayed above freezing. I'm finished with this snow, it can go away now.
ReplyDeleteI'm not fond of cold rain, but running if it's snowy out is ok as long as its an easy day. About the fuel belt, I wear mine both ways. I like the pouch to be in front, but sometimes the bottles chafe me when in front. I bet it's made to be worn either way...
ReplyDeleteha, thought those looked like a jenn creation!
ReplyDeleteYour pix are a blast. FUN! sometimes I miss the snow. I don't miss the cold though. I could do without driving in it as well (and running in it). Fuel belts? don't use them, but wouldn't the clasps be in the front? Duct Tape on the shoes - that sounds more like U. of Ore. weather proofing ideas :)?
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck is snow? (I live in the desert.) I am fortunate to live in a climate where I can run outside year round. Actually, is it really that fortunate when you have to get up at 4 am to run outside? (July-Sept.)
ReplyDeleteI always wear my fuel belt with the bottles in the back. If that's backwards, then so be it! Seems awkward to me to have the bottles in the front.
I love the pictures of your kiddos enjoying the snow. We traveled 7-1/2 hours away to the mountains of NE Arizona this past December. 10 degrees... my kids lasted 20 minutes sledding before they completely melted down.
Hmm I'm not sure about the fuel belt! As for snow... ugh. Pittsburgh is freezing and snowy from January-March. Treadmills = my best friend :p
ReplyDeleteLove the snow. I like to run on it when it is padded.
ReplyDeleteI wear my water belt with the pouch in front, but has seen people wearing it differently. I never have issues with it except sometimes in the summer when I wear a sports bra only..
Your boys are so adorable, Raina:)
Bottles in the back - absolutely. Also easier to adjust the velcro if the pack is too loose or tight! Getting a little tired of the snow, but I'll still run in it over the treadmill. Kinda longing for spring, though.
ReplyDeletehey Raina!! i think you had it on right...but what do I know?! I think a run or two in the snow is great but not all winter...glad we don't have to do that here! I went private but don't have your email...can you send it to me in reply? Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love your pictures!
ReplyDeleteI love running in the snow. Not in the cold rain, though. I've never taped over my trail shoes (which is what I wear to run in the snow), but I sure wish I'd tried duct tape over my bike shoes Saturday...maybe then my shoe covers wouldn't have been destroyed by the trail. Oh, well. Live and learn.
And I've always seen bottles in back.
I wear it the same way, too... much more comfortable! I did many runs in the snow/ice in the past, but am thankful to be in a warmer climate for this year where it's not a decision to be indoors or out. :) Way to go getting out there!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I have no idea what's typical, though I've been with a few groups that did that. I have really fun, cool friends. :)
Deleteno your belt is not on backwards! lol...you are so funny!!! LOVE the duct tape! xx
ReplyDeleteI love running in the snow, as long as it's not too icy. The one time I tried a belt I wore it the same way as you did. I don't know if I could take having the bottles in the front...it seems like they would get in the way. Love your pictures!
ReplyDeleteI wear mine the same way as you Raina. And I have the same belt. :)
ReplyDeleteYup, that's how I wear my belt. Water in the back. We had our first snow yesterday. I love it, but right now it's a bit too icy to run. Love the pic of the little boy with the pile of marshmallows -- ha ha!

Your kids are adorable! I love those pics. Too Cute. I can really offer nothing right now. I have never run in snow, and probably never will. (I live on the Gulf Coast.) I can't imagine... the weather drops below 40 here and I start considering the treadmill, hahah.
ReplyDeleteI also have never had luck with a fuel belt. I've used Camel Pack handhelds for years. They are great, but whatever works for you. I think the thing that matters is that you aren't having a lot of slipage (is that a word?). Slippage could lead to chafing, or a major annoyance if running a long distance race.
Keep up the good work!
Ha ha! I really do think that's the better way to wear the belt. It does rub my skin with the bottles in the front and I think wearing it YOUR way would be better for me. Will have to try it. I LOVE running in the winter. I love 10-20 degrees and sunny and snow firmly packed. Slushy snowy rain like that, not necessarily ideal, but I still think I would mostly prefer it to the treadmill if it wasn't too cold. I HAPPILY choose the treadmill for days like this week which will drop to -42 with the windchill-ISHHHH!!!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the mini marshmallows and the hotdog-ha ha!!
I ran in the snow once! It was more like a "once-in-5-year-freak" snow in greater Houston, but snow nonetheless. I think I shoulda worn more layers because I think I drained Starbuck's that day trying to warm up!
ReplyDeleteThose pics look so fun! Hope your feet stay dry:)
Your children are so cute and they just look so happy being outside in the snow! I enjoy running in the snow as long as there is NO wind at all. I can't stand to run in the wind it just chills me to my bones!
ReplyDeleteThat's how I wear my belt... clip in the front. I ran Monday and Tuesday in the snow and Monday wasn't so bad because it was mostly melted by the time I ran. Yesterday's run was a soggy mess. First off, no one was out at all on the trail I decided to run so I kept thinking about that mama runner who was killed so I kept wondering if it was a good idea to be running in that area by myself and by the end my shoes were soaked!! It took all day for my feet to warm back up. I decided that I like running in rain better than snow. The snowflakes felt like they were assaulting me and I didn't enjoy them when they landed in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteDid the duct tape trick work when it stayed on?
I have no idea about the fuel belt--I'm lucky if my shirt is on the right way! :^)
ReplyDeleteThe "cross-training" looks really fun. I think you guys are getting more snow than Colorado. I do like running in snow, but NOT when I'm really trying to train for something.
I don't think there's a rule except to wear it the way it's most comfortable. My belt holds 4 bottles and when I use them all, I have bottles in the front and the back. I hardly ever run in the snow, so when I do, it's just fun and very cold!
ReplyDeleteAwesome pics! Looks like fun.
ReplyDeleteAs for your inquiry: Yes, you have the belt on correctly. As for snow - I will run in everytime. I HATE running indoors. For example- yesterday was -8 with wind chill (31mph sustained winds) and I ran outdoors. The TM is the absolute last resort. I spent too much time on it during rehab.
Just for my two cents: I think you have the belt on right! And you look so good all decked out ready to run in the snow! I LOVE to run in the snow. The mini marshmallow thing was a crack up!
ReplyDeleteLove the cross training pictures! Looks like your family is having an absolute blast!
ReplyDeleteWhat great pictures! Your kids look so happy to be outdoors having fun in the snow!
ReplyDeletei'm a weeny. I don't run under 50F. And i get cold when its 70F. haha, a true texas girl. But you look cozy!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a fuel belt that holds water -- but if I had one, I'd have the bottles on the back.
ReplyDeleteDuring my run Monday I found a fresh patch of snow ... and I made a bee line for it. Clearly I don't have to worry about snow running here in my little valley - but it was fun for those few paces!
Looks like you had A LOT more than we did - and made the best of it. So fun!
I don't have a fuel belt. And I found people wearing it with the bottle in the back.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm not a fan of cold weather running. Although I don't hate it enough to go buy a gym membership.
Hey there, found you through Rena's blog (and I've seen you comment on some others). I used to wear our (my husband and I run together) fuel belt with everything in the front but I found that having it in the back is more comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading more of your posts!
Hi Jamie! Glad you left your thoughts here. :) Do you have a blog?
DeleteDear Lady Raina, you have posted great winter pictures; I like to see and to read about a place so different and far from here. in my city the snow is unknown.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I'd do but I'd like to try a "icy" run on the snow.
Never worn fuel belt.
I would love to run in snow but that doesn't happen often in my home town of Johannesburg. If I get the chance I'll be out there for sure. I wear my belts in which ever way is suited for the type of run I'm doing and depending what else I'm carrying.
