If you are clicking here, you are probably desperate. In which case, I hope your knee gets better soon too.
I have been running again after taking about a week off. There was something hindering me from flexing my knee and some knee discomfort. Still have NO idea what exactly it is, but I think it might have been a quadriceps tendinopathy. Finally, I think it is going away. And in it's place, I have some VERY confused legs: tight calves, tight hamstrings, hips that feel like I am a not-so-spry 80 year-old....going very slowly.
I am starting to realize I might have a running specialty: marathon training through injury.
Sure. I could be bitter. But, if this is my niche, I choose to embrace it!
The following video (about 45 seconds) demonstrates how to run with a knee injury.*
*Precautionary notes/disclaimer
It would be irresponsible for me to post this without also mentioning that It is not recommended to run when an injury affects your gait. Doing so might cause compensation injuries to occur.
Six weeks to Eugene Marathon! I honestly have NO idea what I'll be doing on April 29th. I WILL be in Eugene- just not sure what exactly I'll be doing there. Bring it ON.
"Run Happy" sometimes = just running. period.
LOL! That's funny. I have a permanent knee injury. I have learned to run with it by keep my lateral movements to a minimum. I can handle the low grade pain as long as I don't twist it.
ReplyDeleteMy Hubby does too, Kepa! Football injury. I'm glad that you found a way to get around it though. :)
DeleteOH MY I'm laughing here. This is so funny Raina. It almost looks like a fake background!! And so funny that you did this in front of people...I wouldn't have been brave enough.
ReplyDeleteOh, It is definitely real!
DeleteLuckily the camera would not go into focus, or I might have had to resort to the bag over the head trick again.
You can do that for 26 miles. That last 0.2 might be a problem though.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should work on my tangents and shortcuts then.
DeleteHoping that pain goes away soon, but at least you've found the funny in it!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tina
DeleteRaina, this is EXACTLY how I ran with my tendinopathy. OMG, based on your running stride, I think you've got the diagnoses right!
ReplyDeleteHaha! I would like a video, but hopefully there is no next time for you!
DeleteThis is so funny! I guarantee you could still run 26.2 faster with this 'modified version' of running than most people!!:D
ReplyDeleteI have a friend going through a lot of knee pain right now as well... hope this clears up soon, lady.
Thanks Christie. Not sure If I am brave enough to try that, but thanks for the confidence. :)
DeleteThanks I needed that!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes, my friend. Get better.
DeleteHa ha! I'm dying laughing how the people behind you don't even give you a second glance!! Oregonians must be used to weirdos like you-ha! So glad to hear you're feeling a little better. Great outlook my friend:)
ReplyDeleteThat is just people in EUGENE, and the northern I-5 corridor. People around here would be looking funny at me and wondering why I was even running. In Eugene, people run doing weird things and no one thinks twice.
DeleteMe too!! They were so not even giving you a simple glance. too funny!!
DeleteLoved the video :-)
I like the shoes :)
ReplyDeleteGlad you are better and do video on a Tendon issue on the forearm i would like to see that..Thought the dog was going to get you..Stay positive :)
That dog was on a mission! The dog park is across the path...haha.
DeleteOK. I don't have the forearm tendon video, but I SURE hope yours is getting better.
You are absolutely adorable!! :)
ReplyDeleteShucks.
DeleteYou are a goof-ball and you have the video to prove it :) Hang in there our bodies are amazing creations and you will figure it out. Keep pressing on Raina!
ReplyDeleteYou are so right- on both levels! Thanks Terri.
DeleteHa ha! That's too funny :)
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, I hope your knee is better soon.

My Running Shortz
Ha ha!! Love this! I love how you're keeping your positive attitude through this. You're such an inspiration on many levels.
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks Jen :)
DeleteLMAO...that's how I look when I'm running to the bathroom...hell, I might just try this technique if it finally gets me running ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL..That is so funny! I thought the same thing. Man I look like I have some problems! hahaha.
DeleteHahahahahaha! Very funny, Raina.
ReplyDeleteI hope it's feeling a little better every day. Love how you can laugh at it. :) You're awesome!
:) Thanks Allison!
DeleteYou are hilarious! I really hope your knee pain settles down and you're still able to run!
ReplyDeleteThanks Laura! Hope you are getting better too!
DeleteMad skills, Raina, MAD SKILLS!!! That was great!
ReplyDeleteYep. mad is a good word for it.
DeleteYou are ready for the Ministry of Silly Walks (Runs)
ReplyDelete8)
Ha! I am all tested and almost ready for the journey.
Deleteit is soccer season again for me. which means my right knee is telling me it's age. it doesn't seem to like my running regime and soccer at it's age.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet...you still play! And run!
DeleteI hope all knee problems and other wonky body parts cooperate for you in Eugene in April! Our bodies feel like a "house of cards" at times, don't they? But then, with a little faith, things come together and just work out fine and dandy. You have a great attitude and I know you will be fine come race day. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteYes. I know you understand these mysterious injuries. Hope you are right!
DeleteLove the video Raina! Way to keep a positive attitude!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mike!
DeleteThis is hilarious!! My favorite part is when the dog almost runs into you and the owner starts whistling and chases the dog. Then you start running back and I can tell the owner is thinking, "What in the world?!!"
ReplyDeleteAnd now for the serious side of my comment... I am STILL experiencing some knee trouble too. I think it is mostly post hilly marathon related but today it dawned on me that I haven't changed out my shoes since December and I have 507 miles on them!! So I actually ordered Brooks shoes today. I have never worn Brooks before but I thought I would give them a try. I ordered the Pure Flow and Launch. What are your favorite shoes to train in?
Sheesh! I hope your knee starts behaving soon. The shoes have some high miles, so it's worth a shot. I love the feel of the pure flows, but have only tried on a pair. I was afraid to try anything new- but now, meh, why not?! I need a new speed shoe!
DeleteMy faves have been the Brooks Ghost 4's. They are a high mileage shoe, neutral, great cushion and good flexibility.
I think the dog owners were wondering why I kept doing that. Haha! It was not my first take :) And their dog was off-leash OUTSIDE the dog park.
Oh man Raina, you are FUNNY, but I'm sorry this is still bugging you!
ReplyDeleteugh...i was hoping to read it was all better:(
I will keep praying for you my deary!!xxx
Thanks for all your prayers, Nicole! It's all working how it should :)
DeleteOh Raina, you've made my day. Love your attitude. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteJULIE! I miss you! Are you going to be racing there? Please email me if you plan to go!
DeleteThat was hilarious! ha! Great advice. I sure hope that knee injury scrams so you can enjoy Eugene. I'd love to do that marathon some day!
ReplyDeleteCould you do your next video on how to run with a bad lower back?! :6)
ReplyDeleteI hope your knee cooperates soon--pain-free, that's my mantra!
I scrolled through all the comments, and I am sad to see that no one saw your demo for what it is: the stiff legged run is actually a running drill that many runners do, but they call it the "Russian Dance". Sorry to rain on your parade :)
DeleteI can tell it's a form drill without even looking it up! Haha. Try it for a few minutes and i promise you will feel it the next day.
DeleteI do it every time I go to the track (twice a week)! It's part of a whole series of running drills I do: Karaoke, High knees, butt kicks, "kick outs", Russian dance, and quick feet.
DeleteGreat funny post! I'd like one on plantar fasciitis. :)
ReplyDelete... of course I clicked there. I hope that the pain will be very soon only a memory. You will run the marathon. Good luck.
