What do most runners do when they get sick?
I really have no idea.
I know what I do: I run, dang it!
In fact, it makes me more hardcore because I ran when I am sick. Truthfully, I felt better today and yesterday during my runs than I did the rest of the day. There is something about getting the body moving, the blood flowing, and the heart rate up that provides some temporary relief.
Or maybe I am just sick in the head for feeling this way. ?
Please don't take this post the wrong way if you are sick and stay home and rest. I actually admire you for "listening to your body". Golly, I'd even advise someone to rest a day (or 3) if he/she is sick. I just can't take my own advice!
Nine days to the race!
Today's workout: a 5 miler at half-marathon pace (I did sleep in and leave late, kept it short for me). Gear: shorts, LS top, reflective vest, no hat or gloves today. Wore the shuffle, did not use it.

I'm just using the slight cold I have as an EXTRA excuse to rest my ankles a little longer. Otherwise, I go until I am too sick to stand.
ReplyDeleteAs to the N95 mask in your picture, those are good for dust and that is about it. They are in all the first aid kits that you can buy for disaster recovery, but if you actually need a mask, they won't help you. But they do make for a nice placebo effect for some people.
Well, I award you 1500 points for running while sick and another 1500 for awarding me 1000. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time taking time off when I'm sick. Usually it will have to involve puking or the like to keep me in from a run.
I could not agree more with you! I would run too!! You are HARDCORE!!! Great workout today and 9 days yippee!! Can't wait for the recap!
ReplyDeleteI keep running if I can, too, and often feel better afterwards, too. Get well soon!
ReplyDeleteWay to get out there and get it done. 9 days! So looking forward to meeting you!
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could try running and sleeping together? :)
ReplyDeletei agree, i always feel better when i'm running. and i'll workout through almost any ailment except for puking...
ReplyDeleteso excited about your race
I got a horrible cold during my Boston training. I really do agree that I felt like absolute crap but the actually running seemed to alleviate some of that. So exciting that the race is coming up so soon! I can't wait to hear about it! I'm getting a little race envy here-might have to add something to my schedule sooner than later!
ReplyDeleteBTW-nice post yesterday. I love Ryan and Sarah Hall and everything they stand for! Quite certain his decisions are being "guided" and they are the right ones for him at this point contrary to popular belief...
Run run run -- that's the only choice in my opinion. As for the mask.. yes I have worn one. The temps were in the single digits and the winds were in the upper 20s. I needed the mask to keep from freezing my teeth!
ReplyDeleteI usually run or play tennis when I'm sick too. And funny you should blog about it, because my daughter is sick, and my throat is pretty sore. And I have a 50K race tomorrow! I'll probably just take it easy and take my time through the aid stations. Good luck with your upcoming race!
ReplyDeleteJohn! I hope you feel MUCH better tomorrow! Thanks for posting and for the tip on the ice-roller idea. Godspeed to you in your ultra!
ReplyDeleteJenn- I can't wait for your 5K!
Jill- I would love to be able to have my cake and eat it too :)
C2- I did that with a ski mask last winter! Yowzers!
NB you should be feeling good soon :)
I hope you feel better soon.
