A recent escapade of mine started off that way!
I had a plan to run trails with a friend, but she couldn't make it. I dropped of the boys and headed to a trail I have scouted out, but never ran. Dexter Reservoir has a lovely view and in the winter will sometimes have clear skies even when town is "fogged in".
It was chilly and the fog was just starting to burn off at 10:30. I got on my Altra Lone Peaks (review coming soon), and headed off across the reservoir road. The wind was biting so I came back for gloves.. And I was off again!
My initial goal was to make up my long run that I cut short over the weekend.
Then I began talking myself out of it.
Or maybe I just realized I wanted to be able to take pictures and not just run.
Or maybe I was tired.
Or maybe I was just being a wimp.
It could be all three.
Anyway, I forgot my camera at home, but had fun with my hubby's cell phone.
Finally found the trail! (It's the rocks without moss, if you were having trouble locating it.)
There were a few dead-end paths taken before I found the "River Trail" that connects Dexter Reservoir to Elijah Bristow State Park.
The trail was a mixed bag of sand, dirt, bark and several stretches of ankle-breakers- round river rocks that roll if you step on them. It was mostly fun. Big bonus points were scored for not getting injured!
There were several smaller side trails that went right to the river, I presume made by fishermen and horseback riders (great access for horse trailers in the parking lots).
Once I was to the second park (about 2.5 miles from Dexter, or 5 miles if you are running with Raina down all the side trails that don't connect together), there was a lovely dirt/forested trail that was (mostly) free of the ankle-breakers.
I tooled around on the "improved" trails a little bit before heading back to Dexter, enjoying the sun that was now out. I wished I had left myself a bigger window for running, but there were groceries to shop for and parent-teacher meetings to attend.
Upon returning to my car, I opened the trunk and set my pack in it.
I grabbed a water bottle out and closed the trunk....With my car keys inside.
Idiot. I am an idiot.
Luckily for me, my dad is kind, retired, and not an idiot.
I sat with my back against the park restroom door where the temperature was about 15F warmer, and waited about a half an hour for him to show up. And like the hero he has always been, he rescued me with a keychain full of older Japanese car keys. (He is a resourceful hero too!)
...We ate lunch at DQ and talked about the long term "hide a key" plan for when he dies ;)
Thank you, Dad! I know you are reading :)
So, I got a trail run and a lesson this week.
****
Other running stuff:
- Somehow I ran 50 miles last week! That's the most miles I have ran in a week since the injury.
- My long run didn't happen this past weekend. It was my hubby's birthday and I just had too many things to do. Instead I have been adding a little bit to my weekly runs with the goal to keep my overall volume up.
- No intervals to report since the last set, but I did do some strides.
- I ran a 14 miler yesterday to make up my long run. That is possibly the first time I have ever ran a long run on a Thursday. I used to be so locked into a Saturday/Sunday schedule. It is nice to let things go sometimes! My pace was pretty unspectacular and took a bit of a dive after 10 miles. But I did do weights and gravel hill repeats in my driveway the day before, so that's my excuse.
Running tip:
Fortunately IT band syndrome is one injury I have not dealt with. Many runners end up with ITBS. If you are one of them, try widening your gait and check out the exercises on this LINK.

That's my week in a nutshell. How was yours?
Did you do any trail running?
Are you rigid about when you do your long runs?
Has anyone come to your rescue lately?

An adventure before, during and after your trail! Of course I have also lost the keys. You are not an idiot, it happens.
ReplyDeleteWell I was member of the trail team of the Navy: long time ago I was 4th in my a.g. at the regional championship and I remember again a terrible race inside the La Maddalena Naval Base (national championship) under a rain storm, with many roots and mountains of mud.
I hope you didn't lose the keys during that race, Stefano! But it sounds like you did...
DeleteSounds like a great week! Beautiful pics! Sorry about the key - I hate when I do things like that! Yay for dad to the rescue! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Erin! Great to hear from you. Have a beautiful weekend :)
DeleteYour dad is a true hero. So glad you didn't drop the phone in the trunk too!
ReplyDeleteThat was my exact thought, too, Kim!! Thanks for commenting. It's good to hear from you :)
DeleteNice trails pics, and good to hear about your progress, 50 miles, that's impressive. You are not an idiot (my wife did the same some time ago) it's just a possibility. From my side a busy schedule from work keep me away from the gym this week, so i hope to catch up my training again this next week, my injuries from running getting better but not ready yet to run again. I want to be like your dad and be always ready to help my daughters :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you will be recovered and running again really soon, Benjamin. There is no doubt in my mind that you are as kind hearted as my dad is! Your daughters are blessed to have you.
DeleteThanks so much for reading and commenting. Have a great weekend!
aaaahhh it gives me hope to hear that you are running so much again!! I'm at 6mos out of and still no running but i'm feeling hopeful! I love your pictures!! wish I could come run with you!!!!
ReplyDeleteSix months is a long time, Nichole. You are mentally tough!! I hope you will be running again soon. I would love to run with you too.♥ So good to hear from you!
DeleteEverybody needs a a resourceful hero like your dad! Speaking of getting help, I can't even count the number of times this week alone my husband has helped me with my computer woes. I ran 14 miles last week, but this week's long run didn't happen. Next week... Next week!
ReplyDeleteHe is a star! Sounds like your hubby is another knight in shining armor :)
DeleteI think you are doing OK for missing.. some training plans say to just alternate weeks anyway. That's what I am consoling myself with!
Thanks for the comment, Tina!
Wow! What gorgeous photos! I need to do more trail running. It's so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSeems like you should have some good ones to choose from up there! Hope you have a great weekend :) Good to hear from you, Amy!
DeleteOOooh it looks so mild and green and inviting, not that I'd know a thing about anything above zero around here these days. Looks like a marvelous trail. Thank heavens for resourceful dads!
ReplyDeleteIt is mild compared to there, I would bet! But cold for me right now :) haha. Grass is still green... I hope your polar vortex lifts soon Marcia!
DeleteThis is so something I would do. But those beautiful trails would probably make up for it. I always wish I was a trail runner, but since I live 2 hours from trails, it is a once-a-year or so deal. :(
ReplyDeleteShoot! I would find a dirt road or something!! I am glad to have those nearby-- usually I have to drive about 30 minutes to a real trail.
DeleteThanks for your comment, Cassie!
Love your trail pics, and awesome you ran 50 miles! That's fabulous!
ReplyDeleteDad to the rescue, I love that. Have a great week!
Yeah, but you are doing GREAT after just having a recent layoff, Kristy. You amaze me! Hope you have a wonderful weekend / week!
DeleteThose photos are pretty damn good for cell phone pics! Love the top one. Sounds like one of those trails you only run once. I used to like 'bush bashing' all the green bits on the map when I lived in Sydney and ended up doing a lot of once only trails.
ReplyDeleteGo for the spare key in one of those magnetic spare key boxes you can buy at auto shops. I used to have one with my old car and it saved me a few times - once in a situation just like yours.
I had a pretty good week - ran my local trail (which I can do with my eyes shut). My long run (12k) is only marginally longer than my usual runs, so I do it whenever I feel like it. When I was doing long runs it used to be Saturday mornings, but I'll switch to Sunday later this year.
I think I will probably go back. There is a trail race there in a week or so.. I just can't figure out if the course goes over the ankle breakers or not. That would definitely slow down a racer! But racing aside, the loops at the second park are pretty awesome.. And my kids could fish if there were another grown-up along :)
DeleteI'm buying one of those boxes next trip to town!
Going to check out your latest post to see how the 12k LR is coming along :)
What would we do without our dads?? :)
ReplyDeleteI'd sure be lost without mine!! Thanks for the comment love, Karien :)
DeleteBeautiful trails, but the ankle breakers do put the fear in me. Great your dad was there to the rescue. I once locked myself out my flat in pyjamas. Took some resolving ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha! That would be quite a scene depending on what a person slept in :)
DeleteThanks for your comment, Andy! I hope Monday - and the rest of the week- treats you well.
Ha! I had a flat tire last week-and didn't make it to the trail. I made the best of it: called AAA and they quoted the exact ETA that I wanted to run that morning. I ended up literally running the locksmith in to my car. the 300 tire bill, I could do with out that. Win some, lose some!
ReplyDeleteOh wow.. 300 dollars? That bites. We just had tires put on our car... one of those expenses nobody really looks forward to!
DeleteSmart of you to run it , lady :)
Your pictures always make me wish I had a trail near me. And I've done the same thing you did, but WAY worse - I locked my keys in someone elses' trunk! I had AAA, but they wouldn't unlock a non-member's car. Drama.
ReplyDeleteThat's something I have never thought about. I am totally curious how you solved that. We opened my car trunk (and door) with a Subaru key, even though it's a Toyota. Kinda scary.
DeleteThanks for commenting, Gracie. :)
Your hubby's cell phone takes some amazing pictures; loving those shades of purple on the pebbly trail.
ReplyDeleteI've locked my keys in the car the exact same way before. It's so much fun. Right now, I've lost a couple sets of car keys and am down to just one key ... yikes. Glad your dad was closeby and could get to you quickly I bet you enjoyed that half hour of just mind wandering thoughts to yourself :).
Actually, I was freaking out about how to get in the car.. and trying to stay warm, and wondering if I was still going to be at the parent/teacher conferences in time! I wish I was so calm.. :D
DeleteGood to hear from you, Jill!
Gorgeous pics! Congrats on the 50 mile week too, that's a pretty solid week.
ReplyDeleteYou need a valet key in a magnetic key box under the bumper.
Thanks, Mike!! I am working on that key box thing.. I used to have a key zip-tied somewhere secret. I think I took it off in another emergency and forgot to replace it. :)
DeleteThat feeling when you realize the key is in the boot is awful! Yay dad! Looks like really great trails.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right!! As soon as I did it I realized my mistake. Instantly. haha. Hopefully I have learned my lesson.
DeleteThanks for commenting, Johann!
yay for trails. boo for lessons!!! you weather is soooo enviable right now. tired of snow and ice...so many more months of it to go...bah!!!
ReplyDeleteThat polar vortex thing has got to be getting old!! Hope you can see some spring soon. We had 50+f yesterday afternoon! I was in heaven..
DeleteGood to hear from you, Tina ♥ !
As always the scenery near you seems gorgeous! As for locking your car keys in - has happened to the best of us. Or well, me. I can't believe your Dad has a box full of keys - he's SO resourceful! Love it.
ReplyDeleteHa! He actually borrowed those from his friend, but I credit him for having a resourceful pool of friends to call on. :) Guess I won't be leaving anything valuable in my car..
DeleteThanks for commenting Petra. I know you are a busy lady these days!
Yum, you had me at DQ. That is my worst fear - to return from a long trail run, positively exhausted, and find my key locked in the car. Good thing for dads.
ReplyDeleteYeah, DQ hits the spot sometimes! I wasn't going to wait any longer to eat either. haha.
DeleteLove your pics, looks like a great trail run! My son locks his keys in his car all the time, I now keep a spare set of his keys with me at all times! Have a great week!Carri~A Running bee
ReplyDeleteSmart move!! I found my two extras and have one hidden safely away now :)
DeleteThanks for commenting, Carri! Hope your foot is better now.
Yay for Dad coming to the rescue! Good thing you didn't lock you phone in there too. Great job with the 50 mile week!
ReplyDelete:) Thanks EB! Yeah.. that would have been pretty bad, haha. Hope you have a great weekend.
DeleteThank goodness for dads!! My running partner's car has keyless entry with a number pad. My next car will totally have that feature.
ReplyDeleteNobody has needed to come to my rescue per se, but a friend of mine has been pretty wonderful dropping off soup for me after an unpleasant dental appt.
I did a "trail" half on Saturday, but there was only about a mile of actual trail; the rest was paved bike trail. Very pretty route between bluffs and river, but nothing like you have there.
Those key pads are great, as long as you remember the code! We had a car with that once too.. it was nice.
DeleteSorry about your dental stuff :( Get better soon, Kate!
Super choice! I hope you love those. I am ready to move into some road shoes and can't wait to try out some on black top. Review is coming! I have the miles now- just need the time to blog it.. so much to blog, so little time! Thanks for the comment♥ !!
ReplyDeleteSo so green and lush!!! AN lucky your dad was around to save you!!! oh man I have done that a time or two. bah!!! Are you loving your Altras??
