Heck. I don't even get to drive three hours to race usually!
But I won't complain, because I have some pretty awesome runs right out my front door. ☺
Conveniently, a lady runner I had met via blogs had
a birthday and needed help celebrating.
Cake is not a bad idea, but we opted for a trip to the Salmon River trail instead, at our mutual friend Jodi's suggestion.
Devon turned thirty-five, so the decision was made that we would NOT run 35 miles each. We split it 4 way.. and with some some shaky running math, came up with almost 9 miles each to run.
As we set off from the Safeway parking lot to ride share our way to the trail head, things looked a little sketchy weather-wise: Pouring rain. Luckily, we were dressed for the occasion- at least Carissa was.
Still, given the choice, I think all of us would rather get soaked for 9 miles in lush forests, cracking jokes and taking photos, than stare at a digital clock on a treadmill.
From the onset, the trail was in great condition. Trees were decorated with lush mosses. Water was roaring down creeks and into the main river.
There were foot bridges.
And switchbacks.
And rocky vantage points where you could stare down into a river valley that seemed to go forever.
It
was
SPECTACULAR.
The only thing missing was snow, which I think is supposed to be somewhere around there this time of year. ?
We made more than a few stops to take silly photos, with what can only be described as a cliff leading to instant death behind us.

The birthday girl gave us all some helpful pointers on taking good jumping pictures.
| Yet another striking photo by Jodi Stilp :) |
Somehow we managed to scramble in (halfway clothed and smelling like roses) just as the sky tore open with buckets of rain that had held off for our run.
I kind of wish I could do it all again tomorrow.

After this run I realize that I don't have the corner on spectacular trails here in Oregon. They are everywhere in this state! I am so blessed when I get to share them with good friends.

Would you rather race with a friend, or go do an easy run with a group?
Do you ever have food fantasies while running?

Raina, this looks like a gorgeous trail! Kind of reminds me of MRT minus that big vista. Perfect way to celebrate a bday. If I dream of food on a run, it is typically pastry + coffee or pizza/burger post long run. :)
ReplyDeleteYou'd absolutely love it, Lauren!! And it goes for miles. I want to go in further!!
DeleteAgree: Coffee post-run is a must :)
That trail, that scenery, those pics absolutely deserve 3 hour trip.
ReplyDeleteevery bit of the trip was worth it Stefano. thanks for the comment!
DeleteSo beautiful. What a beautiful place to get to run. so green and lush, so different from my wide open and beloved Montana plains. I would love to run there!
ReplyDeleteI hope sometime maybe you can come out to Oregon, Christy. It would be fun to run with you!
DeleteInsanely beautiful! I am so jealous! Looks like you guys had tons of fun!
ReplyDeleteThanks Elisabeth! You're turning into quite a trail runner yourself, and I know you would have had fun with us.
DeleteHow lovely, especially with the mist in the air!
ReplyDeleteIf I do a long run, around about mile 12 or so I start thinking about what I want for breakfast, and I always end up fixated on CLUB SODA, of all things. Even if I'm starving, the first thing I want is carbonated water! Something about the long run makes me want the bubbles.
I totally know what you mean, Gracie. I don't drink soda anymore usually. But, a cold Coke is really good at the end of a long run. I was dying for one at the end of my 50 K in September.
DeleteWOW. What a beautiful place to run!! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletethanks Robin!!
DeleteAs always your pics are like a breath of fresh air, Raina! I love the crazy ways runners come up with to celebrate. Our trails are still under snow here but it's melting pretty quickly so there's hope.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness it's starting to melt off, Marcia! You Midwestern runners need to be creative to get a run in out there.
DeleteThat was so fun! Thanks for writing about it.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't ask for a better trail running guide, Jodi! Thanks for taking us all.
DeleteSpectacular is right. You have some incredible places there.
ReplyDeleteAND...my son and daughter in law are looking at Oregon as one of three options for her grad school, so maybe I'll get to enjoy some of those places in the next few years too! :) (Although I mostly hope they end up slightly closer to Illinois)
I can understand wanting to have them closer to you. But think of all the opportunities if you could only come out and visit Kate!
DeleteWow! Wow! Wow! From the views, to your "so high" jump, what an incredible way to celebrate the gift of life. I like a race with a friend and an easy run with a group, but don't mind it at all the other way either.
ReplyDeleteFood? I pine for eggs over medium, turkey sausage, sliced avocados with cherry tomatoes and a flour tortilla. I'm craving that right now.
Those sound like some pretty healthy cravings, Luisa! I've been going crazy for avocados too lately.
DeleteMy legs felt cared for just *looking* at those photos. Not only is it beautiful, but it looks like you are running on pillows. Here in Pennsylvania, when were not picking a line between big rocks, we're running on top of small rocks. Now I want to take a trail-running vacation to Oregon.
ReplyDeleteYes, we're pretty blessed here that most of the trails are dirt like that.
DeleteThey can get rocky, but still probably less than other parts of the country. I hope you can visit sometime! There's lots to see here.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Wow! Love your Blog, photos and the beautiful trails you run... You're an excellent witer! I can identified myself with you for the passion we have for running... When I read the chapter of your injury, it was like if I was reading my own story and I felt the same fears and desperation that you felt exactly the same way! Really inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for reading, Mikey. And also for that feedback.
DeleteI've definitely struggled with some running injuries, but I think they've helped me grow as a runner, and help me appreciate my injury free running periods a lot more.
Thanks again for your kind words ; it motivates me to keep writing this crazy blog.:)
We need to hit up this next time we are up that way. That is just so gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYes! You sure should! And please let me know when you're coming through so I can join you. :-)
DeleteTo be honest I'm with my own company and a little music for company:) Its so awesome to run without restrictions run free if you like:) I did one of those runs this morning and it was inspiring...running with a friend is cool but running by yourself is just as good..
ReplyDeleteToo true! I usually am running solo , but recently started taking my dog. I still like time alone with my thoughts, but this was a special occasion. :)
DeleteEpic shots! That looks exhilarating!
ReplyDeleteI tend to think about pancakes a lot on Saturday morning runs. Good thing there's a café with some good ones when I get back:)
y'all should have brought cake with you! ;)
You would be good to invite to a birthday run ;)
DeleteThankfully Jodi baked some incredible brownies we scarfed down on our drive back.
You could have run 35k! Beautiful location for a birthday celebration run. We have nothing like those fir trees around here. I remember them well.
ReplyDeleteI don't like racing 'with' friends (side by side the whole way) - I like racing them if we are evenly matched but prefer to use race tactics to win. Don't do many group 'long' runs these days. They're fun but not many people like to run 12k for a long run. Too short!
Just stumbled across your blog. Love the pictures of the trail and what a great way to celebrate a birthday! :)
